The eyes turned to the metropolitan church of Agios Minas in Heraklion at noon on Saturday as a new era begins for the Church of Crete, with the enthronement of the new archbishop Eugenios II.

Present at the enthronement of Archbishop Eugenios besides the Prime Minister, the President of the Movement for Change Nikos Androulakis, the Minister of Education Niki Kerameos and the Secretary General of Religions, the Minister of Island Policy Giannis Plakiotakis and the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate was represented by the Metropolitan of Austria Arsenios and the Grand Patriarch of the Patriarchates Theodoros (originally from Crete) while representatives from the Patriarchate of Alexandria, the Church of Greece and the Church of Cyprus, , both from Greece and abroad.

Who is the new archbishop of Crete?

His Eminence Archbishop Eugenios of Crete (known as Evangelos Antonopoulos) was born in Heraklion on February 14, 1968. His ordination took place at the Holy Metropolitan Church of Agios Minas on Saturday, May 28, 2005. His unanimous election as Metropolitan of Rethymno and Avlopotamos took place on September 9, 2010 and his enthronement took place on October 16, 2010.
