An impressive natural phenomenon appeared in the sky of Cyprus. This is the cloud iridescence phenomenon, which was recorded by members of the group “Keirophilos Cyprus”.

The natural phenomenon that causes this beautiful formation is due to the refraction of light that falls on the edges of the clouds where there are very, very small water droplets. In other words, this phenomenon is not due to the refraction of light by water droplets that may be contained in the clouds, which would then produce the rainbow. As a consequence of this, iridescence is classified in the so-called “coronas” or “bright coronas”. In particular, however, iridescences are also observed at the bases of the clouds as segments, or colored zones of mainly red hue, often green and less often blue and yellow, offering a wonderful view. These hues seem to follow the perimeter of the clouds in particular.

The phenomenon of iridescence in general is due to the fact that iridescent bodies have the property of appearing in one color when they refract light and in a different color when they reflect light. In these bodies, incident light is reflected on multiple layers of translucent surfaces. Through the phase shift and contribution of these reflections, the body changes color, as different frequency ranges are differently amplified or weakened.
