Archaeological treasure was found on a mountainside of Crete with impressive findings. According to information from cretapost, it all started when the offices of the Department of Cultural Heritage and Antiquities received information about the existence of ancient objects on a mountainside in the Gournes of Heraklion.

So on Monday morning the authorities proceeded to collect the treasure.

Afterwards, the ancient objects were transported by a squad of police officers and examined by an archaeologist from the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion, who stated that they fall within the protective provisions of the Antiquities Protection Law.

The antiquities that were confiscated and constitute objects of historical and archaeological value are the following:

  • marble head man,
  • part of the head of a clay figurine made in a mold probably of the Roman period,
  • intact Cycladic-type figurine of a female figure with hands joined at the abdomen, probably of the third millennium BC,
  • end of a bronze sword with central ribbing probably of the Minoan period,
  • four-holed bone tool broken into -3- parts,
  • part of a classical or Roman period stringer,
  • votive clay female figurine made in a mold probably of the classical or Roman period and
  • Byzantine copper alloy buckle of the seventh century AD.

It is worth noting that the antiquities will be handed over for safekeeping and final assessment to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. At the same time, a case file was filed and will be submitted to the Criminal Prosecutor of Heraklion.
