An Indian man was arrested in the Indian city of Ganjam after he let a cobra kill his wife and their two-year-old daughter.

25-year-old Janesh Patra had a marital dispute with 23-year-old Basathi Patra. The couple got married in 2020 and had a daughter Debashmita.

According to the daily mail cited by local media, the man allegedly bought the cobra from a snake charmer, saying he would use it for religious purposes.

She filed a complaint with the police

On October 6, Janes released the snake from a plastic jar in the room where his wife and daughter were sleeping, the next morning both were found dead with snake bites, while he claimed to be sleeping in another room. Janes told his neighbors that a snake entered his house and bit his wife and child.

The villagers they killed the snake and rushed the mother and daughter to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced dead. Janesh lodged a complaint with the police and a case of death was registered.

He was arrested a month later after confessing

Ganjam police officer Jagmohan Meena said that Janesh’s father-in-law framed him for murder. Janes was arrested a month after the incident. Suspicions began to grow about the circumstances of the death and police questioned snake charmers in the area. Janes initially denied the charges but eventually admitted to his crimes under questioning, police said.

“The accused was arrested a month after the incident as there was some delay in gathering evidence against him. Meanwhile, we have also received the post-mortem report which clearly shows that the death of mother-daughter happened in the late night of October 6th. This raised suspicions about it how could the reptile remain in the same room until morning several hours after biting them“, he stated and added “The 25-year-old, during questioning, initially denied the allegation and later claimed that the snake may have entered the room on its own, but eventually confessed to the crime».
