Stefanos Kasselakis refers to “yesterday’s unpleasant events”, namely the withdrawal of the Ahtsioglou group from SYRIZA, in his post on Facebook.

“With my hand on my heart, if Efi Ahtsioglou had come to the pre-election campaign and told me ‘this chair is the dream of my group, I either become president or I leave’, I would have backed down. I would have withdrawn my candidacy for the sake of unity” writes the president of SYRIZA and notes that “unity begins now”.

The post in detail

“I would like to share with you some thoughts about yesterday’s unpleasant events. Because SYRIZA is you.

The MPs who left yesterday were not elected with a personal ballot. They are MPs who were elected because, in very difficult times, you voted for SYRIZA and Alexis Tsipras. Personally, I have a clear conscience that I did everything.

I have said since the first night of my election that second is first. I proposed important positions and offices, repeatedly. They were uncharged for unity. They were charged for the split.

Yesterday we had the first post-political split in the country’s history. People who become divisive not for ideological reasons, but because they didn’t win the internal party elections.

With my hand on my heart, if Efi Ahtsioglou had come to the election campaign and told me “this chair is the dream of my group, either I become president or I leave”, I would have backed down. I would have withdrawn my candidacy for the sake of unity.

After all, I was the one who had pledged to stay in SYRIZA regardless of the outcome. SYRIZA was one and will remain one. The legacy of Alexis Tsipras and us, his successors.

For a Modern Left that respects its past, it is proud of its government tenure, but it does not hesitate to acknowledge mistakes.

For a Modern Left with people who are here not because they ended up here, but because they want to belong here and fight here.

For a Modern Left of renewal, of new executives who will emerge from within society itself, without passing the face control of some alleged owners.

For a Modern Left united – a punch. With all fingers equal. Modern Left real. The unit begins now. Because unity is you.”
