The habit of three is going to be fatal friends of experienced climbers – climbers, in the snowy and steep mountain range of Helmos, near the ski center of Kalavrita.
After many hours of searching that began in the early hours of Saturday morning, at noon on Sunday, their bodies were found in the waters of Stygos.
Athanasios Sotiropoulos, a figure of the mountaineering movement in Patras, Ioannis Torrelli, a member of the Patras Mountaineering Association and Panagiotis Pekos, head of the ELGA Corinth, all living residents of Patras, were found dead.
Shortly after midnight, the competent services of the Fire Brigade completed the operation to transport their bodies.
The bodies of the three climbers – climbers were initially transported to the village of Mesorougi, Akrata.
They were then transferred to the University General Hospital of Patras.
The exact causes of death of the three climbers will be determined by the forensic examination.
Earlier, a helicopter that took part in the search operations ordered by the Achaean Deputy Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Giannis Petroutsou, who was at the Coordination Center of the Fire Brigade from the first moment, spotted a red helmet and a blue jacket, but did not confirm missing persons equipment.
Immediately, a signal was given to the ground mountaineering forces that were operating in adverse conditions in the area, to approach the spot, where they found the three missing until then. We also assisted in the searches of the drone owned by the 6th EMAK Patras.
From the ground and air, traces of an avalanche of very large size were found, at the base of the slope in the waters of Stygos, 2km. of the Ski Resort.
Most likely, the an avalanche to seduce climbers, leading them to death.
More than 30 people, including 10 members of the mountaineering rescue team of the 6th EMAK, mountain guides, friends of the climbers, staff of the ski resort and members of volunteer teams, participated in the operation to transport the bodies of the three climbers.
A process that, as sources in the newspaper “Peloponnisos” reported, was particularly difficult and dangerous for the safety of the rescuers.
THE volume of snow and fog, made it difficult to walk on the spot, while there was a risk of causing new avalanches. The rescuers were transported by the tracked vehicle of EMAK and according to information of “P”, from the point where they left, at least 5 hours of walking were required to reach the area where the dead climbers were.
In a statement issued by the ski center of Kalavrita, after finding the climbers, he stated “Fears for the avalanche in the waters of Stygos 2 km away from the facilities of the Ski Resort were unfortunately verified. We mourn for our dear friends. Our warmest condolences. “
Approach from two points
Two simultaneous surveys from different points of approach were carried out in Helmos. Rescue teams were looking for the climbers following their route starting from the ski resort, but also from the community of Messorougi, where access was seemingly easier and finally through this road they were found.
The three men, aged 50 to 55, started on Saturday morning on foot from the area of the ski center of Kalavrita. Their goal, as reported by the information of “P”, to the officials of the Ski Resort, but also to the Authorities, their relatives, was to reach the icy slope from the area “Mavrolimni” and then to climb an ice waterfall and return. It was a route familiar to them.
In the afternoon of the same day in the parking lot of the Ski Resort, employees located their car, however the 3 climbers had not given any trace of life. Immediately an alarm was sounded and the searches began.
One of the mobile phones was calling from the first moment, until it “closed” on Sunday morning.
The head of the investigations was the commander of the Fire Service of Kalavrita, lieutenant Anastasios Kanavos, and the commander of the 6th EMAK Patras, firefighter Theodoros Filippopoulos, under the guidance of the coordinator of operations of the fire service, Lieutenant General.
