“The claim of the Parthenon Sculptures is not the bed of Procrustes” said the vice-president of the Association of Greek Archaeologists Despina Koutsoumba
In the way of claiming the return of the Parthenon Sculptures, after the unprecedented move by British Prime Minister Rishi Sounak to cancel his scheduled meeting with Kyriakos Mitsotakis for today, he said speaking on the Thessaloniki radio station Status 107.7 and on Dimitris Venieris’ show, the vice-president of the Association of Greek Archaeologists Despina Koutsoumba.
“In recent years, things have been in our favor,” he emphasized, explaining that “the British public opinion, after so much work has been done, has begun to change quite a bit and it’s a shame that Sunak, essentially addressing a more conservative audience, doesn’t get the messages , and secondly, the museums themselves are under pressure. The British Museum is currently cut off from the world.
You tell me, he has these findings, what does he care? He cares because a museum has to evolve. If he gave the Parthenon sculptures back to the Acropolis museum, we as a country could in the same rooms that would be left empty to send periodical exhibitions, have an original exhibition every two or three years. This is called renewal of collections and it is important for a museum.”
For the move by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to cancel the meeting with Kyriakos Mitsotakis after the Greek Prime Minister’s statements about the need to reunite the Parthenon Sculptors, Mrs. Koutsoumba emphasized:
“You can only make a political comment on what happened. It is very bad to link such an issue which is a matter of negotiation, which has been started by the Greek governments since the time of Melina and continues until today, so it is timeless, which everyone has contributed to, which Greek scientists have contributed to. it is very bad to manage it with a four-year horizon.
This claim is not the bed of Procrustes.
It has to be something that everyone is aware of that it may be beyond them in time. One government… I say this about our prime minister first of all. Nevertheless, when they come back, all those who put their little stone in to come back, we will all celebrate that day, regardless of who is prime minister then.
This should be self-explanatory. Which is something that goes beyond the four years of one government, or two governments”.
