A huge moon with a … halo made its appearance in the night sky of Crete, impressing with its diameter. The aurora, as the phenomenon is called in meteorology, in this case lunar as there is also a solar one, is not a particularly rare phenomenon, but it is very impressive.

According to meteorologists caused by the refraction and reflection of moonlight on cloud ice crystals and is considered to foretell the coming of bad weather.

Cretalive reader Manos Petrakis who captured with his lens the lunar halo over Cretethe “halomoon” as the international term for the natural phenomenon states:

“The incredible lunar halo over Crete. The phenomenon is caused by the refraction of moonlight through hexagonal ice crystals high in the atmosphere.

moon

The lunar halo is an optical illusion that causes a large bright ring to surround the moon.

Historically, the appearance of moon halos has been taken to foretell rainfall. Although this is not strictly true, it often happens that clouds move into the area and cause rain.”

The moonlight is essentially a visual phenomenon that occurs under certain weather conditions. Presupposes the coexistence of sparse clouds of medium or high altitude in the troposphere’.
