Draft COP26 agreement: Further climate commitments by the end of 2022

by

London, Thanasis Gavos

The draft agreement of the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow calls on governments to “review and strengthen” by the end of 2022 the national emission reduction targets by 2030.

The seven-page document also calls on countries to submit plans and specific policies within the next year that will lead to zero emissions by 2050, such as the goal set by scientists to curb global warming. one and a half degrees Celsius.

Governments are also called upon to speed up the elimination of coal and fossil fuel financing, albeit without setting a deadline, and at least double the collective funding for developing countries so that they can adapt to climate change.

The announcement of the draft agreement comes just hours before British Prime Minister Boris Johnson returned to Glasgow, saying in a nightly statement issued by Downing Street that “we must remove all obstacles” to achieve the 1.5 degree Celsius target.

As of today, the conference is coming to a close, as until its completion on Friday, the negotiators of the 196 participating countries will try to pass the changes they want in the final agreement, as well as to reach a common line on how to monitor the implementation of the commitments made to curb climate change.
