President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) this Tuesday (8) included the national parks of Serra da Canastra (MG) and Serra do Cipó (MG) in the federal government’s concession program.
As published in the Federal Official Gazette, four parks and one forest were included in the list of conservation units of the Investment Partnerships Program (PPI).
In addition to the two mining parks, the Caparaó National Park, between Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais, and the Ipanema National Forest, in São Paulo, were also included.
The Restinga de Jurubatiba National Park, in Rio de Janeiro, was included in the National Privatization Program, according to Palácio do Planalto.
“The measure aims to promote the concession of the aforementioned Conservation Units to the private sector for the execution of public services to support visitation, with a forecast of funding actions to support conservation, protection and management”, said the Planalto, by middle of note.
The government says that the participation of conservation units in the concessions program will bring “an increase in the national and international tourist flow, with consequent benefits for the region, including the generation of employment, income and socioeconomic development”.
In the first week of the year, the Serra da Canastra National Park was the scene of a tragedy that led to the death of ten people.
A wall in Capitólio, a tourist region in the mountains, collapsed on top of groups of tourists who were riding boats on Lake Furnas. The images, captured by video, shocked the world.
In an article on the Fundamental Science blog, by leafgeologist Pedro do Val, a professor at the Federal University of Ouro Preto, says that the tragedy was expected.
“The good news is that we have advanced scientific tools and trained professionals to quantify the phenomenon and thus contribute to the creation of safer ecogeological tourism,” says Val in the article.
