1912: The submarine “Delphin”, commanded by Lieutenant Stefanos Paparrigopoulos, attacks with torpedoes against the Turkish battleship “Mejitiye”. It is the first recorded operation of a submarine with a torpedo in world naval history.

1963: Constantinos Karamanlis suddenly resigns from the leadership of the ERE party and leaves for Paris, accompanied by his wife Amalia.

1987: A Palestinian uprising against the Israelis breaks out in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, also known as the first Intifada.

1990: Slobodan Milosevic is elected president of Serbia, in the first free elections in 50 years.

2002: The UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, delivers to the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides his revised plan for resolving the Cyprus conflict (“Annan Plan”).

2008: In an atmosphere of sorrow, the 16-year-old student Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who was killed by a special guard’s bullet in Exarchia, is buried in the Old Faliro Cemetery. 1971: Alkis Thrylos, philological pseudonym of Eleni Ourani, Greek essayist and critic and the first female academic in Greece. (Born 1896)
