Bakoyannis: The park and playground are returning to the residents and children of the neighborhood to enjoy
The total renovation of Drakopoulos Park has been completed, which includes extensive greening work, upgrading of the park’s infrastructure, and the creation of a new, modern and safe playground, while the ownership status of the site had previously been resolved between the Municipality of Athens and the Red Cross.
After the completion of the works in Drakopoulos Park, a lush green free common area of 4.5 acres was created without a trace of cement, in the heart of an extremely densely built neighborhood. In total, 7,603 new plants were planted on 4,402 square meters, including 1,145 perennial herbaceous plants, 5,200 shrubs, 1,250 ornamental grasses and eight trees, while a fully automated irrigation management system was installed, which contributes to the rational management of water.
Alongside, the central path of the park was paved with cobblestone with a sand underlay, thus ensuring the permeability of rainwater and the aeration of the soil.
The passable areas were paved with pressed tessellation which is a water-permeable material.
Urban equipment such as fountain, pergola, stone seating, theater stage, were maintained, maintained and highlighted. The existing stone walls were converted into seating areas, while new benches were installed. The lighting has been upgraded and strengthened, so that there is a greater sense of security and to achieve energy savings with LED type lighting.
In addition, calisthenics equipment with a special anti-vibration floor was added to the park area.
The new playground
The play area, suitable for children of various ages, occupies approximately 355 square meters and meets specific safety standards in terms of materials and construction of the floor, entrance door, fencing, and instruments.
The toys – constructions were placed on the cast safety floor: wooden swings for toddlers and children, space grid, lighted spring, wooden seesaw, etc.
