A high level of education, modern digital skills, and the need for continuous training characterize the profession of journalist in Greece according to a survey by the Labor Institute of GSEE (INE GSEE) and the Editors’ Union (ESHEA) with the participation of the companies metron analysis, prorata and Alco presented at the Editors’ Association.

As can be seen from the findings of the research, the educational level is high as the graduates of Higher Education make up 38.0%, while the holders of a master’s degree make up 22% and those who have an IEK degree make up 15.5%.

7.5% are college degree holders as well as high school graduates.

At the same time, 9 out of 10 stated that they have a full-time job, more than 6 out of 10 part-time jobs and only 2 out of 10 on a rotating basis.

Regarding the average work experience in a company they stated that it is 14.8 years.

According to the survey, 34% said that they are employed in medium-sized enterprises with 50 to 249 employees, 33% that they are employed in large enterprises with more than 250 employees, while 21% that they are employed in small enterprises with 10 to 49 employees. Just 9% are employed in very small businesses, with 1 to 9 employees.

However, according to the survey in our country, continuing professional training amounts to 32.6% against 55% of the EU average.

Based on the findings on the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and Lockdown, in the journalism profession in terms of skills almost half agree that the post-COVID-19 era will require journalists to acquire new digital skills in their profession. 3 in 10 expressed a neutral stance while nearly 2 in 10 said it would not be necessary.
Besides, regarding the evolution of skills over the course of a decade, employees believe that they will face more complex problems, such as the proliferation of information sources, the increase in the importance of the speed of information management and the decrease in the ability to check the correctness of information.
From the employers’ point of view, the need for skills related to new technologies and digital media, as well as speed, is highlighted.
