The current defense minister, Viola Amherd, will take over as president from January, replacing Alain Berchet in the honorary office in which members of the government are rotated on an annual basis.
Switzerland announced today the new president and the composition of the country’s government for the next four years.
The current defense minister, Viola Amherd, will take over as president from January, replacing Alain Berchet in the honorary office in which members of the government are rotated on an annual basis.
The country’s parliament also voted to elect Beat Jans to the seven-member cabinet to succeed Berchet, who has decided to step down at the end of the year.
Other members of the cross-party government were re-elected for a new four-year term.
The balance in the Swiss government will not change after the shift to the right in October’s parliamentary elections, as Jans, like Berchet, comes from the center-left Social Democratic party.
Justice Minister Elisabeth Baum Schneider was also re-elected to the Federal Council by the Social Democratic party.
Foreign Minister Ignatius Cassis and Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter, both from the center-right Lib Dems, also remain in their posts.
Transport Minister Albert Roesti and Finance Minister Guy Parmelain from the Swiss People’s Party were also re-elected.
New president Amherd represents the Center party in the coalition, which rules by consensus.
