The European Union of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA) predicts an increase in sales of new cars in the EU this year, but points out that there are concerns. for the development of charging infrastructureof electric cars.
Despite the historically low benchmark due to the COVID pandemic, new car sales continued to decline in the EU last year due to a lack of microprocessors. As chip supplies are expected to stabilize in 2022, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) predicts that passenger car registrations in the EU will return to growth this year. The study states that the projected increase will be 7.9% and the volume of new cars to be added to EU roads will reach 10.5 million units.
However, even if ACEA forecasts for 2022 are verified, this year’s performance will be almost 20% lower sales levels before the 2019 crisis. ACEA also urges the EU to reduce its dependence on overseas suppliers to avoid potential future losses in European industries.
Despite the difficulties faced by the new car market in the EU last year, electric cars have increased their share of the sales pie. Nearly 1 in 5 new cars sold in the EU last year was electric.
However, the growth rate of electric car charging infrastructure lags far behind consumer demand for electric cars. ACEA studies show that in the last five years, sales of electric cars have grown four times faster than the increase in charging points.
“Sales of electric cars have increased more from 10 times between 2017 and 2021, while the number of public chargers in the EU has increased less than 2.5 times over the same period, “said Oliver Zipse, President and CEO of ACEA BMW Group. “If this situation is not addressed urgently with the introduction of ambitious targets for all EU Member States, we will face additional difficulties very soon.”
