Bold increases in the salaries and compensations of the governors and deputy governors of the country’s hospitals that will emerge based on the new system of public administrations are foreseen by a Joint Ministerial Decision that implements a relevant commitment of the prime minister.

Until today, the gross monthly salaries and compensations of administrators and deputies of hospitals amount from 2,647.84 to 3,524.69 euros. The exact amount of the fee depends on the number of organic beds of the respective medical unit. Accordingly, the gross monthly salaries of the administrators of the Health Regions amount to 4,254.5 euros and of the deputy administrators of the Health Regions to 3,524.69 euros.

With the Joint Ministerial Decision co-signed by the Ministers of Interior Niki Kerameos and Health Michalis Chrysochoidis and the Deputy Ministers of National Economy and Finance Thanos Petralias and Health Marios Themistokleous the gross monthly salaries and compensations of the new governors – deputy governors of the Health Regions, as well as the new governors – deputy administrators of hospitals that will be appointed based on the provisions of the new system of selection and evaluation of the administrations of the State bodies are formed as follows:

Hospital Governors:

  • 5,121 euros gross for hospitals with a potential of more than 400 organic beds.
  • 4,608.9 euros gross for hospitals with a potential of 400 or fewer organic beds.

Deputy Hospital Administrators:

  • 4,096.8 euros gross for hospitals with a potential of more than 400 organic beds.

Governors of Health Districts: 5,121 euros gross.

Deputy Directors of Health Regions: 4,608.9 euros gross.

It is noted that the new law on the selection and evaluation of the administrations of public bodies also provides for the establishment of incentives in the form of financial rewards for the achievement of the objectives of each body, the so-called “productivity bonus”, enabling the executives of the administrations to claim higher salaries beyond the horizontal increases described above. It is pointed out that the productivity bonus cannot exceed 20% of the annual basic salary annually.

In the next period of time, two uniform notices will be issued that will concern the filling of administrative positions in the country’s hospitals and Health Regions.

The Minister of the Interior, Niki Kerameos, stated:With the new institutional framework for the management options of Public Bodies that we voted and started to implement, the requirements of the candidates’ qualifications have increased significantly. But it was important at the same time to increase the earnings. Today we implement the announcement of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for higher salaries in key positions of responsibility in the State, with our hospitals and Health Regions at the forefront of this effort. For a State more meritocratic, more productive, a State at the service of the citizen».

Health Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis said: “It is our priority to select, with meritocratic criteria, competent, dynamic and determined people for the staffing of the National Health System, who will contribute and fight, with us, for the realization of our vision, to put the NHS into a new era . The new administrations of both the Ministry of Health and the hospitals will be characterized by high professional qualifications (scientific background, administrative experience) in order to successfully carry out their work. From our side, as the Ministry of Health, we must also offer the necessary financial incentives that will make the specific positions competitive».

The Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Thanos Petralias stated: “The staffing of the country’s hospital administrations with competent and qualified staff is of key importance for the upgrading of the National Health System at the level of services provided, through the rational and efficient utilization of available resources. New, capable executives who will be evaluated and deliver results for citizens».

Deputy Health Minister Marios Themistokleous said: “Independence, competence, control, accountability and effectiveness. These are the five principles that govern the new, modern hospital management model to provide the best possible health services to citizens. To achieve this we need to attract the most capable people who know, want and can contribute to the national health system. The announcement by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to increase the salaries of the administrations is being implemented and serves this very purpose, the NHS of the new era».
