See Brazilian gastronomic gifts ranging from R$20 to R$130 to give at Christmas

by

Marília Miragaia

Food is always a good gift option: it works for enthusiasts and for those who just like to eat, without getting caught up in new things.

The following selection brings together ten ideas such as Brazilian jams, honeys and coffees (from national ingredients and production) that serve both audiences.

The items, starting at R$19, work well alone or combined, depending on your budget — and the parish.

RS olive oil

One of the representatives of national production, Sabiá started in 2018 in the Mantiqueira mountain range and, four years later, it also started producing in Rio Grande do Sul. It has blends (made with different types of olives) and varietals (with just one type ), like koroneiki (R$ 94, 250 ml), made from this Greek variety planted in the south of the country that has aromas of tomato, green apple and cut grass — and a more pronounced bitterness.

Roll cake in SP

No one needs to wait for a trip to Pernambuco to bring to São Paulo the very thin dough cake rolled with guava jam (450 g; R$60 or R$65 for delivery). The recipe is one of the highlights of the grocery store at the entrance to the Altar Cozinha Ancestral restaurant. Located in Vila Madalena, Carmem Virgínia’s house also sells other products such as seasonings and drinks.

Mantiqueira Gesha Coffee

Born in Ethiopia, one of the most valued coffee varieties in the world, gesha, produces aromatic drinks, with floral notes and balanced acidity. Coming from the Santuário Sul farm, in Carmo de Minas, in the Minas Gerais portion of the Mantiqueira mountain range, Pato Rei’s gesha (R$ 120; 250 g) is similar to the norm. More affordable, the rapadura lot from Cerrado Mineiro (R$ 60; 250 g) has sweetness, light floral and fruity that resembles peach.

Bottled cashew friend

Not only Brazilian, this drink is more specifically from São Paulo: it was invented in the extinct Pandoro bar, a celebrity spot opened in the 1950s. The recipe was bottled by the APTK brand in a version made with cashew, natural lemon juice and vodka. It costs R$130 for 375 ml, or four doses, and can be purchased online.

Fruit jelly Brazilian

Seasonal ingredients, many of them native, are used to produce jams — therefore, many products are seasonal. This is the case of the version made with jabuticaba (R$ 33), which has a firm texture and contains small pieces of the peel. Another recipe (R$ 33) is cambuci jelly, a fruit native to the Atlantic Forest, with a pronounced citrus flavor.

Gin with local ingredients

Brazilian distillery Yvy launched the Terra e Ar labels after going on expeditions across the country to research local ingredients included in the formulas. The Ar version (R$99) is distilled in the presence of açaí, cambuci, pitanga and guaraná, among other ingredients. In addition to its own website, the brand can be purchased at chains such as St Marche and Mambo. There is a refill in an aluminum can for sale (R$ 75.90)

Family ketchup

Launched in 2014, Strumpf became known for producing ketchup with generous pieces of tomato, which appears in versions such as rustic (R$21) and smoked (R$21). Over time, the line also gained other members, such as mayonnaise (R$ 19, green, with basil) and onion caramel (R$ 23). On sale until the 23rd, the kit with four mustards (with pickles, grains, American and Dijon) plus cucumber relish costs R$ 136 for R$ 108.80.

Native bee honeys

Native bee honey has many gradations of textures, aromas and flavors. A pioneer in this production, Mbee has different versions such as yellow uruçu (light, with high acidity and an alcoholic sensation reminiscent of liqueur) and tiúba (floral and medium sweetness), both R$ 95 (R$ 140 g) each .

Vermouth with Brazilian botanicals

The Companhia dos Fermentados online store is part of a group with a school and publisher focused on fermentation. Much of this knowledge and the products sold revolve around Brazilian ingredients. This is the case with vermouths: there is jabuticaba (R$ 134), cashew (R$ 134) and persimmon with Brazilian botanicals (R$ 129). The book “Brazilian Fermentation” is also a good gift option. ciadosfermentados.com.br

Brazil nut bramble

The Brazilian sweet appears in a version made with caramelized Brazil nuts, covered with 40% cocoa chocolate (R$ 63.90, with 11 units). The bean to bar chocolate shop also has options such as the jabuticaba bonbon filled with jabuticaba ganache (R$89, with 14 bonbons).
