It was not clear whether the missile had hit the ship or not, Reuters reports.
Danish shipping company AP Moller-Maersk ( MAERSKb.CO ) said on Thursday that the Maersk container ship Gibraltar was targeted by a missile while traveling from the Omani city of Salalah to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and that the crew and vessel were reportedly safe.
It was not clear whether the missile had hit the vessel or not, Reuters reports.
“At this time, we are still working to establish the facts of the incident,” Maersk said in a statement.
The incident took place near the Bad al-Mandab strait that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, where Yemen’s Houthis on Tuesday claimed responsibility for a missile attack on a Norwegian chemical tanker.
“The recent attacks on merchant ships in the Bad al-Mandab Strait are extremely worrying. The current situation puts the lives of seafarers at risk and is not sustainable for global trade,” Maersk said.
“As the global shipping industry cannot resolve the issue alone, we call for political action to ensure a rapid de-escalation,” the company added
