From there they jumped the fence to get out on the main road without being seen and then stole two cars to reach Heraklion, where they were arrested in the city center.

The other two convicts who escaped arrest remained in Chania without, as they claimed to the judges, knowing where they were.

What the three defendants testified

The first to testify was the 29-year-old who has been convicted of drugs, who, answering questions from the Court, said that he was asleep in the detention center and woke up when he heard others breaking the window and followed them. He said that as soon as they left the Police Station, they separated from the two who were escaping and the three of them stole a motorbike and started looking for open cars. After 4-5 tests they found the truck and the three left for Heraklion.
However, as he mentioned, the vehicle had a problem and from BOAK they went to Sisses where they stayed with petrol and left it there and looking for the parked cars they found one whose key was in the shade above the driver’s seat. So they went to Heraklion and specifically to Ammoudara where they stayed until dawn. Then they roamed the city until they were caught. Answering a question he said that they met a girl who gave them money. It should be noted that during the arrest, a knife was found on him, which he said he found in the second car they stole, as well as drugs, which he said he bought shortly before they were arrested.

The 43-year-old, who has been sentenced to life in prison for robberies in Attica, later testified that as soon as they arrived in Chania on Friday night, they were told that they would not go to prison but to detention centers. He was outraged and said that after so many years in prison he does not accept to suffer in the miserable conditions of the detention centers. He has been re-arrested at the police station and he suggested to the Pakistani (three lifers) who are wanted to escape. He then described how they removed an iron that had screws with a nail clipper.

Essentially, taking the main responsibility of the escape, he described in detail how they went through the broken window in the hallway, through the unlocked door to the garage and from there to the backyard of the mansion from where they jumped over the fence. He admitted that he knew all the weaknesses of the guard. He then stated that the 29-year-old who testified first.

The apology of the third fugitive of the 32-year-old Albanian did not add anything new. He essentially stated that the two previous defendants had predicted.

How the escape took place

During the trial, a witness police officer, answering questions from the President, described what was happening in the detention center of the police building and what happened when the detainees were transferred there.

As he characteristically said, the cells of the detention centers do not lock for specific reasons, the security cameras are not of good quality, while the President stood particularly in the conditions that prevail there.

As he said, the fugitives took down an iron and using it as a lever, bent the irons of the small toilet window and left.

Then they went out into a corridor and through an unlocked door, they went to the underground garage. From there they went to the courtyard and jumped over the fence. Asked if there was a guard, the witness said that there was a purpose but they did not go where the purpose is at the entrance of the mansion. Only the moment they jumped from the fence has been recorded by the cameras.

The Prosecutor of the headquarters asked why the cells are not locked and the witness replied that this is done because there are not enough forces for the procedures to be done. Prisoners are constantly asking for different things and it is not possible to constantly lock and unlock. It is an unsuitable place for criminal prisoners, the witness stressed.

He also pointed out that the detention centers are old and do not meet the current requirements especially for the transfer of detainees.

In his testimony, another police witness said that they were lucky that they did not take the purpose of the detention centers hostage and pointed out the fact that the transfer department has a great shortage of human resources.

While the third police witness reported that he found the iron with which the fugitives managed to break the toilet window. However, even in this case, the Court’s questions were exhaustive about the security conditions in the detention centers, how the cameras work, what happened to the garage door that was unlocked and the fugitives left after jumping out of its window. toilet.

What a witness said about the escape car and the keys to the starter

The Albanian brother of the owner of the car that the three accused stole to escape from Chania said that the car had been parked outside their house since Saturday night. They leave the keys on and the doors unlocked, because the car is old and they do not pay much attention.

Answering questions, he said he did not know the accused fugitives and described what he did on Monday morning when it became known that their car had been stolen. He pointed out, however, that if one does not know, from the outside it is difficult to see that the key is in the starter.
