The bitter cold did not deter the dozens of Santa Clauses, who… went swimming in Thermaikos, attracted the attention and gave smiles to those who walked along the New and Old Beaches of Thessaloniki.

The reason for approx 40 rowers of the adult coastal rowing section of the Friends of the Sea Club, who on Sunday morning put on the characteristic red caps and jumped into the water to convey the message of Christmas.

“It has become a custom for us, a few days before Christmas, to row in Thermaikos dressed as Saints, to excite the passers-by, to convey joy, to offer a beautiful image, but also to support a charity club or a voluntary association”, notes the world champion of classic and coastal rowing, European champion, manager of the adult coastal rowing department / Coastal Rowing Club Thessaloniki, Nikos Goundoulas.

Santa Rowing, as this special Christmas celebration is called, took place for the seventh year and this year it supported the Greek Children’s Village in Filiros.

Coastal rowing

The coastal rowing section of the Friends of the Sea Club is the first, fully organized rowing section for adults in Greece, which deals exclusively with coastal rowing. It was founded in collaboration with the athlete and for many years world champion Nikos Gudula.

Coastal rowing is the extreme version of Olympic rowing. Here the athletes do not row in calm waters (flat water), in lakes and rivers, but in the open sea (rough water) having to face, in addition to their opponents, all the prevailing weather conditions!

It is not enough for the inshore rower to have good technique and physical condition, but he should have very good orientation, know how to row in all weathers and know basic safety principles at sea. A noble and demanding sport that harmoniously exercises the whole body and is aimed at everyone, men and women, who love the sea.
