The university and research community of Northern Greece and Thessaly and the Association of Hellenic Defense Material Manufacturers (SEKPY) proceeded to establish a Defense Industry, Higher Education and Research Interconnection body with the aim of producing new knowledge, products and cutting-edge technologies that will strengthen the productive and defense capabilities of the country, but also of the European Union.

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Macedonia and the Universities of Ioannina, Western Macedonia, Thrace and Thessaly, SEKPY and EKETA participate in the AMKE being established in an effort “for Europe to acquire its own defense in the unstable environment that is forming on its borders “, as characteristically stated by the new Rector of A.P.Th. Apostolos Apostolidis. He emphasized that “as university teachers and researchers, we are committed to doing everything in our power to utilize the scientific potential of our institutions and their networking, with the corresponding European potential, in order for Europe to acquire technological proficiency in the defense sector beneficially absorbing the significant funds now available to the European Union for research and development in this specific field”.

A Latin saying attributed to Julius Caesar states “If you desire peace, prepare for war.” This was emphasized, among other things, by the vice-president of EBET, Manolis Vlachogiannis, to underline the need to develop the defense industry in Greece.

“New knowledge is disseminated through education, and then highly trained human resources are able to apply new technologies and organizational methods and procedures that increase productivity and improve the quality of production,” noted the president of the SEKPY, Tasos Rozolis.

“There are many active companies participating in the defense sector, producing hardware and software systems of exceptional quality that are internationally competitive,” noted the Vice-Chancellor for Outreach and International Relations of the University of Macedonia, Alexandros Hatzigeorgiou.

“Today, our country is given a great opportunity to join the countries that will have high technology in matters of defense”, pointed out one of the founders of the institution under establishment, the professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering, AUTH Giorgos Karagiannidis.
