962: The Byzantine general and later emperor Nikephoros Phokas crushes the Arabs in Aleppo, Syria.

1909: In the newspaper “Ergatis” of Volos, the Communist Manifesto of Marx and Engels, translated by the distinguished scholar Kostas Hatzopoulos, begins to be published continuously.

1924: The government of Andreas Michalakopoulos signs a contract with the American company ULEN for the water supply of Athens.

1933: In Germany, the Dutch anarcho-communist Marinus Van De Lube, who was accused of setting fire to the Reichstag (Parliament), is sentenced to death.

1790: Jean-Francois Champollion, French archaeologist, who deciphered the hieroglyphic writing of the ancient Egyptians (1822), pointing out that on the “Rosetta Column”, which had been discovered during Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign (1799), there was the same text in hieroglyphics and Greek writing. 1896: Giuseppe Tomasi Di Lampedusa, Italian nobleman and author of “The Cheetah”, successfully adapted to the cinema by Luchino Visconti. (D. 23/7/1957)

1834: Thomas Malthus, English economist and priest, who is considered the “father” of demography. He formulated the law that bears his name, according to which the population tends to increase faster than the food needed for its needs. (Born 13/2/1766)

1972: Andrei Tupolev, Russian aeronautical engineer, manufacturer of the eponymous airplanes used mainly in civil aviation. (Born 10/11/1888)

2013: Victor Sarigiannidis, distinguished archaeologist of Greek origin. (Born 23/9/1929)
