Vassilis Karras, one of the most important folk singers of his generation, who with his hoarse voice left an indelible musical mark, passed away yesterday at the Trans-Balkan Hospital of Thessaloniki, at the age of 70.

The popular folk singer had been battling cancer for a long time. His death spread great sadness across the country, with parties and political leaders making announcements and people expressing their feelings on social media.

Especially in Thessaloniki, yesterday an open-air party was organized where thousands of people – mostly young people – said goodbye to “Lord Vassilis” by singing his songs.

From the nightclubs where they appear, fellow singers bid him farewell in their own way, with the crowd singing along and clapping excitedly.

Karras made huge hits with records that went gold and platinum. His biggest commercial success was with the album “You Made Me a Tramp” which sold over 180,000 copies.

In his numerous concerts in Europe, USA, Asia, Canada and Australia he was worshiped by Greeks and foreigners.

The people – young people in the majority – loved Vassilis Karras because “Vassilis” also showed them his love and gratitude in his concerts.

“Every time the heart broke, when a weight weighed you down, when a knot choked you, when the capsule consumed you, you were ALWAYS THERE, next to each one of us. To hurt, to love, to “drown” our dalka with your songs. Have a good trip, giant,” writes a fan to X, capturing the mood in the world that loved him.
