The Open Museum of Dispiliowill take you back in time and give you an idea of what one looked like Neolithic village next to Lake her Kastoria about 7,500 years ago.

Its goal is the representation of a direct, tangible, and experiential image of Neolithic life, always based on the findings of archaeological research.

It was created in 1997-99 as a supplement to the excavations of the adjacent Neolithic Settlement carried out by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from 1992 until today.

The idea for an Open Museum came from G. X. Kourmouziadis, Professor of AUTH, and director of the excavation until his death in 2013. It is inspired by the excavation of Dispilion, but also uses elements of Neolithic culture of the area to present a more complete composition.

The Neolithic village not only represents what was revealed in the adjacent excavation, but projects an overall picture of the Neolithic lakeside settlement.

The exhibits are replicas of the Neolithic finds from the Dispilion excavation and are displayed in sections that show specific activities (eg cooking, storage) so that it is easy for the visitor to immediately understand their role and function.
