A Programmatic Agreement for the development of the Information System of the National Register of Bridges was signed by the Ministers of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras, Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou and the Managing Director of the Information Society (KtP M.A.E.) Stavros Asthenidis.

The Agreement is another important step towards creating a model of sustainable and resilient infrastructure, as the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport aims to systematically record all bridges nationwide and monitor their inspection, assessment and maintenance processes.

Already, with a Ministerial Decision, the Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Regulation has been approved, while the Administrative Authority for Bridges has been established.

The aim is to have the platform operational by 2024, where all bridge management bodies will register the identity and technical data of existing bridges. In this way, their exact number, characteristics and maintenance needs will be recorded.

The Program Agreement provides for the design and implementation of an information system, which will support the functionality required to enable the registration of bridge data at a nationwide level and the preparation of the National Bridge Register, as well as the inspection, evaluation and their maintenance.

The information system will be implemented with modern technological means, guarantee data security and be fully compatible with gov.gr standards.

The project is implemented by the Ministry of Digital Governance through the Information Society (KtP M.A.E.) within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan Greece 2.0 with funding from the European Union-NextGenerationEU with a budget of 400,000 euros plus VAT.

The information system will include:

  • Ability to manage all Agencies and their data on a special screen, to which only officials of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport will have access.
  • Creation of a Register of Bridges by the users of the application, who will configure the bridges of the Agency to which they belong, to carry out the actions and follow the instructions of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
  • Action planning and recording for optimal inspection, evaluation and maintenance recording. At the same time, the system will provide the possibility of automatic notifications for the bridges.
  • Operational information and data extraction, in order to produce controls to monitor and supervise the completion of data and actions.
  • Sharing data with third party systems so that information can be sent for each bridge.

After the signing of the Program Agreement, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras stated:

“Until today, the state does not know exactly how many bridges there are and in what condition they are. This is now changing. We must have sustainable and durable infrastructure both for the daily safety of citizens and for dealing with extreme natural phenomena. The Program Agreement for the creation of the database of the National Register of Bridges is a fundamental step in this direction.”

For his part, the Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou emphasized:

“Using the resources of the Recovery and Resilience Fund, we are immediately proceeding with the implementation of an important project, which we are working systematically to put into operation within 2024. The National Register of Bridges, where all the required data will be captured for the first time, from the identity and the technical characteristics up to the maintenance needs of the bridges, will contribute decisively to the sustainability and resilience of our country’s infrastructure. A crucial priority given the extreme weather events we are faced with as a result of the climate crisis”
