The Authorities in the country are on standby as in the last two weeks there has been an increased circulation of the SARS COV-2 virus, as well as other respiratory viruses (flu, respiratory syncytial virus-RSV) with experts ringing the alarm bell ahead of the New Year for further dispersion.

According to the EODY data on the coronavirus, an increase in dispersion is recorded, while admissions to hospitals increased by 37%. Specifically, in the last week, 62 deaths and 54 intubated patients were recorded, while at the same time, 102 JN.1 strains were detected – a sub-variant of BA.2.86 recognized by the WHO as a sub-variant of epidemiological interest.

For this reason, on Friday afternoon the EODY proceeded to announce recommendations, among other things, for the use of masks in MMMs, closed spaces and hospitals. For experts, the return of the mask is imperative, recommending that it be used in places where there is overcrowding, mainly by vulnerable groups. Also, there is a strong recommendation to vaccinate the elderly and vulnerable groups as vaccination rates this year are very low.

Thus, after the meeting of the Public Health Emergency Response Committee during which all the latest epidemiological data were discussed, the EODY strongly recommends the following:

1. It is necessary to vaccinate as soon as possible with the updated vaccine for Covid, as well as with the flu vaccine, people over the age of 60 and people with underlying diseases – as recommended by the National Immunization Committee.
2. It is extremely important to use a protective mask in all areas of health facilities (e.g. Hospitals, Health Centers), in Elderly Care Facilities as well as in closed Structures that host vulnerable populations.
3. Especially for people who belong to the vulnerable groups of the population (elderly, people with underlying diseases), upon symptoms, to seek medical advice in time, with the aim of making a timely diagnosis and immediate treatment.
4. It is essential that people living in aged care facilities and other closed vulnerable population structures adhere to preventive measures and get vaccinated against influenza and Covid with the updated vaccine.
5. In addition, it is strongly recommended that the general population observe the measures to prevent viral respiratory infections: hand hygiene, systematic ventilation of closed spaces, isolation upon symptoms, continuous use of a mask especially in crowded areas, limiting contacts with vulnerable people and carrying out diagnostic tests.

EODY continues to systematically monitor the course of respiratory infections, the peak of which is expected in the coming weeks. At the same time, the genomic surveillance of virus variants circulating in the community is being intensified.

“We earnestly ask the citizens to implement preventive measures, so that we avoid serious cases of illness and the loss of our fellow human beings. Especially, since we now have at our disposal effective preventive measures, such as vaccines and effective treatment, such as antiviral treatment against Covid, it is a shame that human lives are lost” notes EODY.
