33 Syrians were found in Pano Merabello yesterday and another 29 refugees were rescued today off Gavdos – In the same area, another 70 people were found in the morning
Within a few hours they arrived at Crete three different groups of refugees. They are 29 people who were on board a wooden boat and were spotted on Saturday morning sailing 16.5 nautical miles south of Gavdos. According to ERT Chania, the migrants were rescued by Coast Guard men and taken to Agia Galini.
A few hours earlier, another 70 people, Egyptians, Syrians, Palestinians and Pakistanis were spotted at dawn on Saturday on the beach of Gavdos. They were initially transferred to Sfakia and then to Chania for the identification process.
In the meantime, another group of refugees was spotted on Friday morning in the area of Agios Antonios in Pano Merabello. These are Syrian refugees who were found wandering in the wider area. Among them are two women and a minor girl. According to ERT, everyone is in good health and temporarily accommodated in Pedopolis Neapolis until the identification procedures are completed in order to move in the first days of the new year to a hosting structure in mainland Greece.
It is estimated that the boat that transported them landed them during the night in the bay of Agios Antonios, probably coming from Turkey. From that point the group of 33 people roamed the area until it was located.
It should be noted that from December 27 until now, groups of migrants have been spotted in Crete every day. The phenomenon is on the rise in the last quarter as it is estimated that the good weather conditions favor the traffickers’ crossings.
