A man and a woman fell into the hands of the Greek Police43 and 74 years old respectively, in whose possession 56 old church icons were found and confiscated.

The two are accused of violating the legislation on the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage in general.

Specifically, from the Department of Cultural Heritage and Antiquities of the Attica Security Directorate business was planned and implementedyesterday at noon in the area of ​​Moschato, after a thorough investigation and utilization of relevant information.

As part of the operational action, a police team located a car in which the 43-year-old man was riding. After checking the interior of the car, 55 church icons were found and confiscated.

As it emerged from the investigation, the 43-year-old had obtained the images from the 74-year-old, who was located and arrested in the area of ​​Nea Ionia, while after a search of her home, an additional image was found and confiscated.

The ecclesiastical icons were transferred to the headquarters of the above service and examined by an archaeologist of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Piraeus and Islands, who stated that 20 of them fall under the protective provisions of the Antiquities Protection Lawwhile the rest need further investigation.

The antiquities will be delivered to the Piraeus Archaeological Museum for safekeeping and final assessment. The filed case file will be submitted to the Criminal Prosecutor of Athens.
