Medical examiner Leo for the 3 children in Patras: Sudden death is not associated with the main disease

by

The experienced medical examiner and president of the Forensic Medicine Society, Grigoris Leon, spoke about the case of the death of three children in Patras, which is now being investigated by the GADA homicide department, on SKAI TV and the show “Simera”.

He explained that his colleagues described the death as “sudden”, meaning that they could not link it to the main disease. One explanation could be if all three children had a common heart problem, however in this case it sounds like they had different heart problems.

Mr. Leo added that the case should have been investigated if there is a common genetic background “but even in the third death, one of the possibilities we need to investigate is whether there is a congenital anomaly, as we say, common to all children” .

The experienced medical examiner said that this question can be answered, although it is not easy, with a complete autopsy on the 9-year-old girl, histological, toxicological and genetic examinations.

“When we have children who are hospitalized, that is, they did not end up at home suddenly, they have some diseases, they are hospitalized and apparently they end up for a reason, rather unrelated to the disease they were in, so it means that an investigation is needed,” he said.

Pakos: To be assigned to the homicide “there are some gaps”

For his part, Demosthenes Pakos, head of the Athens police department, explained that the assignment of the case to the homicides shows that there are some gaps.

As the case is at the preliminary investigation stage, he asked everyone to be very careful in their assessments and to wait for a few weeks for his colleagues to do their job.

He added that his colleagues are asked to ask if there are gaps, omissions, any wrongdoing.
