The unfortunate woman was swept away by the waves that came ashore in Kyparissia.

In Ilia a heavy truck was overturned by the winds.

A strong storm also occurred in Athens.

In Patras, at around 10 o’clock the winds grew so strong, they resembled storms.

The bad weather also hit Ilia.

On the beach of Spiantza, the roofs of the houses were destroyed by the tornado.

Nothing was left at all and the area resembles a bombed out landscape today.

In Pyrgos the heavens opened and the strong winds left nothing standing.

They even overturned a truck weighing more than 4 tons.

In a business with marbles on Alfeiou Street, the site was destroyed by the strong winds.

At the same time, the stormy winds that swept the capital of the prefecture of Ilia last night lifted even marbles weighing half a ton.

Due to the strong winds and the stormy sea, the beach in Kouroutsa was filled with foam.

The icon in Athens

The disaster also hit the northern suburbs of Athens and the square of Filothei was turned into a mountain of tree trunks.

The bad weather left images of absolute chaos in the area where in a few minutes it uprooted the largest part of the trees in Siadima Square.

The strong winds terrorized the permanent residents.

At 1:15 in the morning in Psychiko, very thick branches started to fall.

Strong gusty winds uprooted everything even a tree that was behind the trunk, by the root, about 2 tons.

The Psychiko lighthouse, where lightning struck a DEDDIE substation, was also heavily damaged.

Cars were destroyed in Kallithea.

Thessaloniki

In the area of ​​Harilaou, ten minutes were enough to uproot 3 more trees, destroying the railings of a local school.

Huge volumes of water fell on the city.

In the area of ​​Thessaly, the fire department received 15 calls, 10 of which were for tree cutting.

Parga

The pedestrian street of Parga became one with the sea and the waters from the waves reached the shops that operate on the beach.

How will the weather develop?

Tomorrow Monday we will have rain and sporadic storms mainly in the west, south and east Aegean.

The winds at the beginning of the day in the Aegean will locally reach 7 Beaufort, from midday onwards they will weaken and the temperature will drop slightly tomorrow.

However, from Tuesday as northern winds will prevail, the temperature will drop further and Wednesday looks like it will be the coldest day of the week.

Already levels of the civil protection have carried out an autopsy in areas mainly of western Greece and recorded the disasters.

Closed schools

The worsening weather means that many schools have decided to remain closed tomorrow, Monday.

Specifically, due to the deterioration of the weather, the schools that will not operate on Monday (8/1/24) are:

– In Zakynthos. All Primary and Secondary Education schools, as well as Municipal Kindergartens by decision of the Mayor of Zakynthos, Mr. Georgios Stasinopoulos.

The suspension of their operation was decided for preventive reasons due to the intense weather phenomena prevailing on our island in the last 24 hours, in order for the school units as a whole to be checked for any damage.

– On Lesvos, Molyvos Primary School will be closed due to the damage caused to the school on its roof by the very strong winds blowing in the area.

– In Pylaia, where according to voria.gr due to the extraordinary weather phenomena and the fall of trees on the fence of the schools of the 2nd Kindergarten of Pylaia and the 4th Primary School of Pylaia and mainly due to the destruction of the natural gas facilities, the schools will remain closed on Monday 8 January.

At 485 calls to the Fire Department

The Fire Service Operations Center received a total of 485 calls due to the gusty winds and heavy rain and storms from Saturday afternoon until 6pm today.

Most of the calls are mainly for tree felling and assistance.

Specifically:

In the Attica Region, 196 calls were made and 102 tree fellings and 41 object removals were carried out.
In the Region of Western Greece, 101 calls were made and 56 tree fellings and 9 object removals were carried out.
In the Region of Central Greece, 45 calls were made and 37 trees were cut down.
In the Peloponnese Region, 32 calls were made and 22 tree fellings and 2 object removals were carried out.
In the Region of Central Macedonia, 37 calls were made and 16 tree fellings and 2 object removals were carried out.
In the Region of Western Macedonia, 11 calls were made and 8 tree cuttings were carried out.
In the Region of Eastern Macedonia, 5 calls were made and 4 tree fellings and 1 object removal were carried out.
In the Region of Thessaly, 15 calls were made and 10 trees were cut down
In the Ionian Islands Region 15 calls and 10 tree fellings and 1 object removal.
In the Region of Epirus, 11 calls were made and 8 tree fellings, 2 water pumpings and 1 object removal were carried out
In the Northern Aegean Region, 15 calls were made and 10 tree fellings, 1 object removal and 3 water pumpings were carried out
In the Region of Crete, 2 calls were made and 1 tree felling and 1 water pumping were carried out.
It is recalled that according to the updated Emergency Weather Deterioration Bulletin (EDEK) issued today, Sunday, January 7, 2024 by the National Meteorological Service (EMY), the heavy rains and storms:

will continue until late in the evening in the Ionian, Epirus, western Sterea and possibly the western and southern Peloponnese.
at times they will affect Thrace and possibly eastern Macedonia and the islands of the eastern Aegean.
A gradual subsidence of the phenomena is expected from Sunday evening onwards.
