The first 24 hours are critical for the 9-year-old from meningitis
Intubated at Hagia Sophia Children’s Hospital the 9-year-old from the area of Nea Figaleia who was also diagnosed with meningitis is being treated at the Kyparissias hospital.
The 9-year-old is going through the first critical 24 hours as the doctors characterize it in such cases.
The student returned on Monday to his school in the primary school of N. Figaleia, after the holidays, but at some point he felt malaise and headache. His parents were notified to take him home and the next day he did not go to school. His parents informed the school management that their child had contracted meningitis, in order to take measures and inform the parents of the other students.
The Municipality of Zaharos, the mayor Kostas Mitropoulos and his colleagues moved quickly as soon as they were informed of the event. The school grounds will be disinfected on Wednesday morning so students can return to a safe environment on Thursday. At the same time, parents and students were guided in K.Y. Sugar in order to receive information about what they will do as a precaution. “We have mobilized immediately in order to properly deal with the situation for the safety of the student community and we are also monitoring the student’s situation with our best wishes for a speedy recovery” commented the mayor Zacharos Kostas Mitropoulos.
Speaking to ilialive.gr, the director of the Zaharos Health Center Prokopis Papazafeiris, emphasized that “… we were informed by the Kyparissia Hospital about the incident, and we immediately coordinated all the necessary actions with the Mayor of Zaharos, Mr. Mitropoulos, regarding the information and prevention. We contacted the EODY and it was decided in a meeting we had with Mr. Mitropoulos, deputy mayors and other agencies, for preventive reasons, to close the school and disinfect it. In cooperation with the school administration, the parents of the students who had close contact with the sick child were informed so that the children could receive preventive treatment. In addition, the parents of all children were informed to be vigilant for any symptoms. Of course, the microbe is not that contagious and it is not easy to spread through the air.”
For his part, the director of Primary Education of Ilia, Andreas Karatzas, noted in his statements to ilialive.gr that “… a case of meningitis appeared in the 4th grade of the primary school of Nea Figaleia. In good cooperation with the Health Center, the school management and the Municipality of Zacharos, we gave the contact information of all parents to the Health Center, so that the parents could be informed. We have done what is foreseen in the context of student protection and the educational community.
The school unit was closed as a precaution for disinfection and from tomorrow (Thursday) it will operate normally”…
