The Delta mutation in the sewage of Thessaloniki is almost undetectable

by

Stabilization with indications of de-escalation reflects the trend of concentration of the viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in the last measurements of the week for the research conducted by the Sewage Epidemiology Team of AUTh with EYATH, in collaboration with the Region of Central Macedonia and within the National of EODY.

From the beginning of the week, fluctuations were recorded between the measurements, with their rolling weekly average, however, showing a slight decrease in viral load.

Specifically, in the samples taken daily at the entrance of the Thessaloniki Wastewater Treatment Plant, regarding the rationalized values of relative viral load secretion, the average value of the two most recent measurements, namely, Wednesday 09/02/2022 and Thursday 10/02/ 2022 is:

-Fixed (-11%) in relation to the average value of the two immediately preceding measurements of Monday 07/02/2022 and Tuesday 08/02/2022.

Marginally stable (-23%) in relation to the average price of the previous Wednesday 02/02/2022 and Thursday 03/02/22.

“Although the level of viral load is high and corresponds to a large spread of the virus, the quality of the measurements tends to be an estimate of a gradual improvement of the epidemiological picture, which as always requires more days to draw a safe conclusion,” he said. the rector of AUTh and scientifically responsible for the research project, Professor Nikos Papaioannou.

Asked what are the data that contribute to an improvement epidemiological picture the rector of AUTh answered:

“From February 3 onwards, based on 8 measurements, the rate of de-escalation of the viral load shows a doubling every 15 days. Perhaps most importantly, the pathogenic Delta strain of the virus is now marginally detected in sewage. Therefore, with the almost universal prevalence of the Omicron strain, from which a very large number of citizens in Thessaloniki have become ill or become ill – mainly asymptomatically – in combination with the fact that the vaccination rate has now reached a fairly high level, “A wall of immunity has been built in the community, which we expect in the near future to lead to a de-escalation of all indicators of the pandemic.”

The coronavirus assessment methodology in municipal waste, developed by the AUTh team, streamlines the measurements of the virus genome concentration based on 24 environmental factors, which may alter the results of the measurements. The molecular method of real-time PCR, developed by the AUTh Team, has the ability to selectively amplify the part of the genome that encodes the spike protein of the Omicron strain.
