He said that we don’t seem to have a particular issue as the area produces earthquakes from submarine faults up to 5.5 degrees on the Richter scale.
Speaking to Sky 100.3, Professor of Seismology Efthymios Lekkas was reassured for the powerful 4.8 magnitude earthquake centered off Kymi in Evia which was particularly felt in Attica.
He mentioned how we don’t seem to have a particular issue as the area gives earthquakes from submarine faults up to 5.5 on the Richter scale.
He added how scientists will monitor the seismic sequence although he estimated that it is probably the main earthquake.
The strong earthquake, noticeable in Attica occurred at 16:15.
According to the Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale, centered 24 kilometers southeast of Kymiin the sea area off Evia.
According to the original Geodynamic publication, the focal depth is at 14.6 kilometers.
Ten minutes after the 4.8 Richter earthquake, a 2.4 Richter aftershock was recorded, with the epicenter shifted 17 kilometers southeast of Kymi, heading towards Attica.
At 4:33 p.m. a new aftershock occurred, with the same epicenter as the initial tremor, measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale.
