The speed of the winds blowing on the northern coasts even reaches 140 km/h, while in the Berlin and Brandenburg region speeds of 90 km/h were recorded
Heavy rains and strong winds are being caused in Northern and Eastern Germany by the typhoon “Gitka”, which has hit the region since the night. In North Rhine-Westphalia a train derailed trying to avoid a tree that had fallen onto the tracks, while coastal ferry services in the North Sea have been cancelled.
According to the Federal Weather Service (DWD), the speed of the winds blowing on the northern coasts even reaches 140 km/h, while in the Berlin and Brandenburg region speeds of 90 km/h were recorded. The ferry connection Rostock – Gentser (Denmark) has been suspended since the morning, for safety reasons.
A Northwestern Railway train derailed earlier today in Bad Driburg, East Westphalia, but none of the 50 people on board were injured. The train derailed when the driver tried to avoid a tree trunk that had fallen onto the tracks due to bad weather. The repair of the damage to the tracks is expected to be completed by the evening, however no further problems are expected for the traveling public, as in any case, due to the strike at Deutsche Bahn (DB), no trains are running in the area.
The phenomena are expected to continue tomorrow, mainly with strong storms, while the winds are estimated to weaken from noon.
