The trial for the death of Vassilis Mangos was postponed until September 20, 2024, due to the abstention of the lawyers. The three policemen who are accused of beating him, were going to sit in court today and outside the courts representatives of collectives, institutions, student associations and unions of Volos gathered early on, demanding that justice be served. The central figure of the protest was once again his father, Yiannis Maggos.
According to gegonotanews.gr, it is recalled that three and a half years ago, Vassilis Maggos was beaten by MAT, OPKE outside the city’s courts and was brought to A.T. Volos where he suffered insults, humiliation and torture, while late at night the policemen threw him on the street in a semi-conscious state and with 6 broken ribs and he was later taken to the hospital, according to the complaints of his family and expert reports.
As Vassilis’ family has denounced, the Volos prosecutor, having sued only three of the torturers ex officio, leads them to a mock trial for simple misdemeanors, characteristic of the very few cases of police brutality that end up in the courtrooms.
At the same time, he did not accept the lawsuit of the Mangou family, which has now appealed to the Prosecutor’s Office of Appeals, requesting that the charges be upgraded to felonies and that all the torturers be tried, with the latter accepting the appeal and ordering new investigative acts, which, however, are delayed unnecessarily.
