A love story starring a pair of swans unfolds in Kastoria.
When the female was attacked by stray dogs a few days ago, the male tried to protect her by circling her with open wings.
Thanks to the intervention of passers-by, the bird was transported injured to the treatment center, with the male following and not leaving his partner for a moment, even when he entered the doctor’s office!
Now he stays next to her in the infirmary, takes care of her wings and screams when someone goes to approach her.
“Swans are together for a lifetime, even when one is widowed, it is difficult to mate again”, explains to APE-MPE Nikos Panagiotopoulos from the “Environmental Protection Company and Wildlife Care Station of Kastoria”, who treated the injured bird. In fact, he knows well the pair of swans and its history, since he himself passed them “rings” a while ago, when they came to the area from Athens.
“The male was from Crete, the female from Evia, they passed a little from Athens for treatment and traveled by road, a few months apart, to Kastoria, where I ringed them, they were released and became a couple,” he says. In fact, because the other pairs of swans in the lake of Kastoria alienated them, they started to build, at a distance from the others, their own nest.
“Yesterday, however, the female was attacked by a group of homeless people and unfortunately she was injured. The morning walkers who were at the spot after a while, saved the situation. The image is indescribable … One swan is sitting helplessly down and the other is fighting, making circles with its wings open, chasing the dogs “, describes Mr. Panagiotopoulos who managed to approach the female with calm movements, under the attacker. look at the male, take him in his arms and walk to the care station located a few meters away.
“When I got close, I turned my head and realized that her partner had taken me afterwards and came with me to the station, I opened the door and went to the treatment center … he is always by our side patiently making small screams until we take care of the her injuries. “After we finished and took her to the convalescent home, he came with her and sat next to her … she will be there”, says Mr. Panagiotopoulos.
In fact, this morning, when she went to see the injured female, she saw her partner taking care of her feathers with great devotion.
“I wish him well because he has big back injuries. “Anyway, her partner will be there.”
