Autopsy by engineers and aerialists at the Stadium – The part of the roof that was detached got “entangled” with the lightning protection of the Stadium
The services of the municipality of Heraklion have been on full alert since yesterday afternoon when they were informed that a 50-meter section of the roof at the Pankritio stadium was detached.
With the first light of day, aerialists climbed the electric lighting pylon in order to make a first assessment of the extent of the disaster, and the conclusions are disappointing.
“The part of the roof that was detached folded in two and fell on top of the rest of the roof as a result of which it got “tangled” with the lightning protection of the Stadium,” Deputy Mayor for Sports Mr. Yiannis Tsapakis told Cretalive.
Engineers from the Technical Service of the Municipality of Heraklion, in good cooperation with the airmen, performed an autopsy early this morning.
The consequence of all of the above is the decision to immediately close Spyrou Moustakli Street (from its junction with the coastal avenue, until just before its junction with Lakonias Street) as well as the Pankritio Stadium until Thursday, February 1, 2024 so the damage to the canopy will be reassessed and new decisions will be made.
Until then, citizens and passing drivers are kindly requested to avoid driving in the area, while residents can use nearby roads.
It is recalled that yesterday, immediately after the end of the Municipal Council which was in progress, the Mayor of Heraklion went to the Pankritio Stadium for an autopsy (see here) while the visit of the competent vice-mayor Yiannis Tsapakis was preceded, at which time the decision was taken to evacuate the Stadium from the athletes and workers who were at that time for training inside the premises of Pankriti.
