The largest positive temperature deviations were recorded in western Macedonia with average monthly values varying up to 3°C above normal levels for the season
This January it was the second warmest January since 2010 in northern Greece and Thessaly and the third warmest in western Greece.
According to the network of 53 meteorological stations of meteo.gr of the National Observatory of Athens which have been operating continuously since 2010 until todaythis January the average value of maximum daily temperatures fluctuated at high levels almost throughout the country, compared to the average of the period 2010-2019.
The largest positive temperature deviations were recorded in western Macedonia with average monthly prices fluctuating up to 3°C above normal levels for the season. In western and central Greece, the Peloponnese and the Aegean islands, smaller deviations were recorded, from +1.3°C to +1.6°C.
The first ten days of the month marked the higher positive temperature deviations, of the order of 12 °C above the normal levels for the season mainly in northern Greece, while the coldest period with negative deviations in eastern Greece was the last five days of the month, during the bad weather “Avgi”.
In Athens, the mean monthly maximum temperature deviation was +0.5°C, with 18 of the 31 days of the month being warmer than normal for the season. In Thessaloniki, 19 days of the month were warmer than the average value of the period 2010-2019, where the average maximum temperature of the month fluctuated +1.9°C above normal levels. They were observed in Xanthi and Ptolemaida the most days with a positive temperature deviation (23 days) followed by Naoussa and Patras with 22 days.
