“Every night we hear gunshots”: Shocking testimonies of Greek expatriates in Ukraine

by

The approximately 150,000 Greek expatriates in Ukraine are watching the dramatic developments with bated breath, with many leaving the country “aron – aron”. Speaking to SKAI, they describe the dramatic moments they experience, expressing anxiety for the next day.

“To understand, we hear gunshots every night. Not only now. And this has been happening since last year. “From these two schools that we are close to, we see military vehicles passing by”, Nikos Michos, a teacher at a school in Mariupol, tells SKAI.

He notes that he will return to Greece tomorrow, while many have already left their homes.

“There has been a much greater concentration of military forces than in previous months. “Of course we were a little more noisy because you do not know what is happening, a spark can ignite anything,” he points out.

At the same time, many expatriates are even preparing to send their children to Greece as they are afraid for the next day.

“We are more afraid of children. They started last night, yes we are hearing gunshots now. Everyone said to leave by 15, whoever can leave should leave by 15 February. “I am thinking of finding a camp, so that at least 100,200 children leave, 300 people leave here”, Natalia Papakitsa, a resident of the village of Sartana, points out to SKAI.

However, they do not leave their homes.

“I want to send my daughter to Greece but I will stay. “I have both my mom and my father here and they do not want to leave,” he underlines.
