SOS is broadcast by the Hellenic Association for the Protection of Horses for nearly 500 animals (200 horses, 200 cats and dozens of dogs), as after the closure of the Athens Hippodrome on January 30, they are at risk.

Moreover, it is a serious problem the Hippodrome clinic, which until now served and rescued horses from central and southern Greece. Its closure is a huge blow is emphasized by the Association which has posted a relevant announcement on Facebook.

The announcement in detail

“We have all been informed about the recent events at the Hippodrome of Athens, where with the announcement of Hippodromes S.A. the closure of the racecourse has been announced with an evacuation date of March 4, 2024. Unfortunately, with no evacuation plan in place, there is the risk of once again harming the animals, who really are the only ones who are never to blame.

That’s about 200 horses, 60 Dogs Voice dogs that have been rescued, 200 stray cats and some stray dogs that have been at the facility for years. The least we can do is to press the government for a significant extension of time so that the animals can be transported safely, respecting the welfare rules. Quick and hasty actions can only be taken against these animals.

An additional serious problem is the Hippodrome clinic, which until now served and rescued horses from central and southern Greece. Its closure is a huge blow, as the only equine surgery clinic is located at the University of Thessaloniki.

Our association has sent a letter to all the ministries to extend the decision and we hope that the authorities will show understanding. Pending developments, let’s unite for the protection of animals!”
