He moved away to a wooded area
In a fenced area at Almond paste which falls under jurisdiction of the Hellenic Police, a young wolf was trapped and removed after the intervention of the environmental organization “KALLISTO”.
According to a statement from the organization, the animal, aged approximately 2 years and weighing 28 kg, was captured, radio-tagged and re-introduced to a forested area, far from human activity facilities.
The young animal – probably in search of a place where it would feel safe from stray dogs and other wolves – was trapped in the area of the Greek Police. The police informed the Forestry Service and then “KALLISTO” was notified, which with the immediate intervention team for the wolf of the “LIFE Wild Wolf” project, went to the scene under the guidance of the organization’s partner Dr. George Iliopoulos. Special traps were placed in order to capture the animal, which were controlled on a 24-hour basis by OFYPEKA officials, and finally, yesterday afternoon, the wolf fell into a trap, was drugged, radio-tagged and released at the foot of Mount Parnitha.
“The process of trapping, drugging, radio-tagging, transporting and reviving it in a new area is a practice that is applied internationally and in the majority of cases is effective as it gives the animal the necessary shock to avoid approaching inhabited areas. areas” is stated in the announcement of “KALLISTO”.
The young wolf’s movements will be tracked via radio collar on a daily basis and if the animal approaches an area of human activity in the future, data from the radio collar will make its location known, making it easier to repel it.
The aim of the LIFE Wild Wolf project is to achieve balanced wolf conservation by managing potentially critical situations arising in European human-dominated landscapes. The initiative is implemented in eight European countries and through the cooperation of 18 partners. In Greece, the area of application of the project is the National Park of Parnitha and its partners are “KALLISTO” and OFYPEKA, with the contribution of the Management Unit of the National Parks of Parnitha, Schinias and Saronic Gulf Protected Areas.
