The decision was made following a request submitted by the president of the Association of Relatives of Tempo Victims, Maria Karystianou, during her meeting with the Archbishop of Athens, Mr. Ieronymos.
Circular note to all churches of the Archdiocese of Athens and to all Metropolises sent by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, on the occasion the completion of one year from the railway Tempe accident.
The circular urges the temples to proceed to 57 mournful tollson February 28, the day of the tragedy, as a sign of honor and respect to the memory of the victims of the accident.

The Circular note of the Holy Synod states precisely:
“To the Holy Archdiocese of Athens and the Holy Metropolises of the Church of Greece
We are hereby informed that on February 28, 2024, it will be one year since the unprecedented train accident in the area of ​​Tempe, which caused the sudden death of fifty-seven (57) Greek citizens, mostly young people.
Therefore, following the relevant request of the President of the Association of Relatives of Tempo Victims, Mrs. Maria Karystianou, we urge you that on the above date, the 28th of February 2024 at 10 am, each Holy Church of the Province of Theosostos to ring fifty-seven bells, in proportion to the number of victims of the accident in question, as a sign of honor and respect to their memory”.
