The recruitment of 440 forest commandos, and additional scientific staff of 60 people, who will staff the Special Units of Forest Enterprises, the establishment of which had been announced by the Prime Minister after the great fires that hit the country in the summer of 2021 provides an amendment of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection submitted to Parliament.

The mission of the forest commandos will extend to three areas: First of all, to assist in the execution of forest protection projects against the risk of fire, in addition to the support
during firefighting operations, through specialized hikers and airborne units and the use of special motor vehicles and construction machinery. They will also assist in dealing with the consequences of natural, technological and other disasters.
The staff of 500 people will staff the six Special Units of Forest Enterprises that will operate in Elefsina, Attica, Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Crete, Lamia, Ioannina and Patras.
Forest company firefighters will be hired with an employment relationship under public law, their term of office will be seven years, including the time of training, from the total of which their permanence in the newly formed body will be judged. Must be up to 28 years old while the age limit is increased to 31 years for those who hold a university degree. Their selection will be made by scoring and among the criteria is the possession of a degree in Submarine Destroyer or the School of Paratroopers of the Armed Forces.
