Another volcanic eruption on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula is considered likely to occur, with experts predicting that an additional fissure will open in the coming days – possibly within the city Grindavík.

Magma is building up again under Svartsengi at a rate that could trigger another eruption in the coming daysaccording to the Icelandic Met Office (IMO).

As of Monday, February 26, it is estimated that 268 million cubic feet (7.6 million cubic meters) of molten rock lie underground 4 kilometers north of the town of Grindavik.

This amount of magma is approaching the levels that fueled eruptions from the same volcano in December 2023, on January 14 and again on February 8.

If we compare the picture of the eve of previous volcanic eruptions… the probability of them being added increases when the volume reaches 8 to 13 million cubic meters [283 έως 459 εκατομμύρια κυβικά πόδια]IMO representatives said in a written statement.

“If the magma build-up continues like this, we will reach the lower limit tomorrow.”

If an eruption occurs, warning signs are likely to be very short-lived, IMO officials warned.
