A program of the municipality of Athens begins today (1/3), which concerns the voluntary donation of bone marrow/hematopoietic cells, in collaboration with the Hellenic Intermunicipal Network of Healthy Cities and the “ORAMA ELPIDAS” Association.

The program will be implemented in all the Multipurpose Municipal Clinics of the municipality by specialized staff, with the aim of raising awareness and informing the citizens, obtaining a compatibility sample, increasing the number of volunteer donors and, by extension, strengthening the National and Global Archive Bone Marrow Donor Volunteers.

According to the announcement, necessary conditions for someone to be registered as a volunteer hematopoietic cell/bone marrow donor in the National and Global Bone Marrow Registry are:

1. Be 18-45 years old and healthy.

2. To complete the registration application at the Medical Center of his area, as well as a brief medical history.

3. To provide a sample of oral swab (saliva).

Afterwards, the samples will be transferred to the “ORAMA ELPIDAS” Association so that the volunteer donor can be registered with the World Organization of Voluntary Donors.

“Through this partnership, we are proving in practice that together we can multiply the message of care and create a positive impact. A person’s life may depend only on you. Give hope, give life”, says the announcement-call of the municipality.
