The unemployment rate in the country was 10.4% in January this yearcompared to 11.3% in January 2023 and an upwardly revised 10.4% in December 2023. The unemployed amounted to 495,132 people, marking a decrease of 34,245 people compared to January 2023 (6.5%) and an increase of 1,741 people compared to December 2023 (0.4%).

The unemployment rate for women rose to 13.2% from 14.8% in January last year and for men to 8% from 8.6%.

By large age groups, in the 15-24 age group the unemployment rate rose to 22.9% from 26.8% in January 2023 and in the 25-74 age group to 9.7% from 10.4%.

Also according to the ELSTAT labor force survey:

The employed amounted to 4,266,094 people, marking an increase of 115,538 people compared to January 2023 (2.8%) and by 28,810 people compared to December 2023 (0.7%).

People under the age of 75 not in the labor force, or “people not in the labor force” (that is, people neither working nor looking for work), totaled 3,028,607 people, a decrease of 103,663 people compared to January 2023 (3.3%) and by 29,422 people compared to December 2023 (1%).
