Taking stock of the experience gained from its involvement with Formula 1, Renault raises the hybrid technology above. Introduces the Renault Clio E-Tech, which essentially shows the path that the French company will take in the future.
After eight years of research and development, the French decided to use a successful model to apply advanced hybrid technology. This was the Clio, which for years combines great usability and fuel economy. Now with hybrid technology the French want to make it even more friendly and ecological.
There were no changes to the exterior design, only some changes to the interior to provide the driver with complete information about the hybrid condition of the car. On the instrument panel there is an indication of how charged the battery is, while on the main screen there is a function that analyzes the way and the operation of the car, such as for example how many kilometers were traveled purely with electricity. The interior did not differ from the previous version, with the materials and fitting remaining at high levels and the spaces allowing passengers to be comfortable even on long journeys.
Renault uses the naturally aspirated 1.6-liter engine that produces 91 hp, while it also has two electric motors. The main one produces 49 hp and is located in the gearbox and the second is smaller, it produces 20 hp and its role is to synchronize the gear changes in the special automatic transmission, but also to decide the transition from the thermal engine to electric motor. The 1.2 KWh lithium-ion battery is located below the luggage compartment, without affecting its capacity. The combined power is 140 hp and gives good performance to the model that needs from the standstill to the first 100 km / h 9.9 seconds. The final speed reaches 180 km / h.
During the test drive we found that the hybrid model can be driven purely with electricity for about 10 to 15 kilometers and for a speed that will not exceed 75 km / h. This has the effect of greatly reducing fuel consumption, which in mixed use and for the hundreds of kilometers we drove ranged close to 5.5 liters for every 100 kilometers.
Each time it starts, the start is electric. We had three drivers at our disposal. Eco, My Sense and Sport that greatly differentiate the response of the engine and the steering wheel. In the Eco program, the system gives priority to electric propulsion, in My Sense the petrol engine cooperates with the electric motors always guided by the economy, while in Sport the emphasis is on performance. There is also the “EV” button that the driver wants to move electrically, as long as there is enough energy in the battery, but also the “B” option on the gear lever, for increased energy recovery each time the driver lifts his foot from the gas pedal.
During the trip, we liked the good sound insulation levels, which gives a luxury to the model. In the city its behavior is familiar and is essentially in its element, with consumption falling significantly with the operation of electric motors. Finally, the gearshift from the automatic transmission becomes subtle and silent. The acquisition cost of the car starts from 23,540 euros.
