Window fell from his position without injury, during the lesson, at 1st Experimental Primary Schoolhoused at 132 Egnatia Street, in the center Thessaloniki.
In the room where the 5th grade taught, the teacher asked a student to open the window for ventilation, as part of the measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus, but the case with the glass was disconnected from the wooden frame of the window and fell down.
Engineers in charge of the school buildings of the Construction and Maintenance Department of the Municipality of Thessaloniki repositioned the sheet in the window, but the school management claims that the age of the building – in combination with its preservation and any interventions requiring time-consuming procedures – is dangerous. for corresponding accidents.
«Τα frames dating from 1893. We have also pointed out in writing to the competent services that we consider the building unsuitable for school accommodation. The staircase, due to its danger, is not suitable for public service, let alone for 250 students and 35 teachers to go up and down every day. The building is preserved and every intervention passes not only by the municipality, but also by the ephorate of antiquities “, said the school principal, Chryssa Gerani, to APE-MPE.
The 1st Experimental Primary School of Thessaloniki was housed in a building at 29 Archaeological Museum Street, but in 2019 the technical services of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, in the context of the primary pre-earthquake inspection carried out in school buildings, found significant static problems. Ms. Gerani expressed the view that “the necessary interventions could be made in the building of the Archaeological Museum to resolve the issues of statics and the school unit could return there.”
From his side Municipality of Thessalonikithe deputy mayor of Technical Works and Sustainable Mobility, Makis Kyrizidis, told APE-MPE that the engineers who repositioned the window assured that the accident did not occur due to the age of the window and that it was not found that the hinges were broken.
“In the inspections carried out by the competent services, the building has been deemed suitable for housing the school”, noted Mr. Kyrizidis, while regarding the prospect of finding a permanent home for the 1st Experimental Primary School of Thessaloniki, he clarified that is a discussion that takes place, but the relevant decisions are taken by all relevant bodies, such as the Regional Directorate of Education.
