Anxiety prevails in Patras because of the third case of microbial meningitis in a 20-year-old student while visiting the city for this reason echelon of the EODY in order to inform the citizens but also to consider the possibility of the possible necessity of taking further measures.

The third case, according to pelop.gr, concerns a student of the Polytechnic School of the University of Peloponnese, which is based in the facilities of the former TEI in Koukouli. The 20-year-old student is hospitalized in a critical condition, intubated in the ICU of the University Hospital of Patras, under the supervision of professor and director of the Unit Fotini Fligou, who is supported by all the medical specialties that monitor and control the functioning of his vital organs. The same team treated the second case involving a 20-year-old student of the Mathematics Department of the University of Patras, who was discharged from the ICU the day before yesterday and is now being treated at the hospital’s Pathology Clinic.

As far as the 20-year-old student is concerned, the information states that he was found unconscious in the house where he lived, by his parents, who were worried because he was not answering phone calls made to him.

He was immediately transferred to “Agios Andreas”, where meningitis was diagnosed and he was intubated with simultaneous notification of the EODY. Subsequently, it was decided to transfer him to the PGNP.

For his part, the commander of the 6th Health Region, Giannis Karvelis, got in touch with the EODY, and thus it was decided to descend today in Patras. At the same time, Mr. Karvelis stated that “All the required measures provided for in the relevant protocol were taken”.

For her part, the deputy governor of Health Anna Mastorakou said: “For the case of microbial meningitis in the 20-year-old student, the tracing and chemoprophylaxis with antibiotics for students of the University of Peloponnese was successfully completed.” She clarifies that “It is not related to the incident of the student with contact transmission, who has now overcome the risk and is being treated at the Pathology Clinic. We send our best wishes for a good recovery and for our part we continue the cooperation with the EODY, as well as the surveillance”.

We remind you thatthe first case of meningitis a student at the University of Patras was diagnosed in mid-January. The visit of the EODY echelon will begin today with a meeting at the office of the commander of the 6th Health Region.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE EODY

In a statement issued by EODY it says: “Since the appearance of the first case, EODY has been in close cooperation with the 6th Health Region, the Directorate of Public Health of the Region of Western Greece and the competent authorities of the university institutions.

He sent instructions regarding the investigation of contacts of the cases and the immediate administration of chemoprophylaxis. In addition, following relevant information and instructions from the Deputy Minister of Health Irini Agapidakis, he will carry out (today) an on-site intervention with the transition of echelon and the participation of the Mobile Health Teams (MOHY) of the EODY in Patra.

The team will inform the students studying in the departments where the cases appeared and will administer chemoprophylaxis to the close and wider contacts of the cases, while targeted vaccination of close contacts is recommended, according to the opinion of the National Immunization Committee (NEC)”.

EODY particularly emphasizes the great importance of early detection and treatment of cases of meningococcal disease. Citizens and especially young people who have clinical symptoms compatible with the disease (fever and rash) should immediately contact a doctor. Physicians on suspicion of meningitis must immediately administer treatment and refer to a hospital.
