In a total prison sentence of 19 years a 53-year-old man who sat on the bench of the Mixed Jury Court of Thessaloniki accused of sexually abusing his underage niece was sentenced.

He was found guilty of abuse of a minor and rape, acts which, according to the judge’s decision, were committed in 2016 and 2021, when the sufferer was 11 and 16 years old, respectively. The court did not recognize any mitigating circumstances, while after his conviction the 53-year-old was sent to prison.

The case reached the Court when, in August 2022, the girl revealed to her mother what had happened. There had been previous visits to a psychologist, because the mother found scratches on her daughter’s handsas she testified. “My house is an open grave. I’m afraid for my child, he doesn’t eat, he doesn’t want to study,” she testified in court.

In his statement, the defendant denied the charges, declaring his innocence. “I am very sorry to be in this position. I had D. (niece) as my child. We had good family relations. I’m not in a hurry, I didn’t do anything,” he apologized, among other things.

The prosecutor had also asked for his guilt of the seat which in its market sent the message to the children who experience similar abusive situations “not to hesitate to speak”.
